Welcome to my site and some information about my trajectory as an artist

I am British, born in Egypt and brought up in Turkey and Morocco.  I was educated in Great Britain and the United States, where I earned a Ph.D. in History from Columbia University, New York, in 1992. My love of painting started early and was stimulated by my travels. I was attached to the diplomatic corps before returning to the States to teach. My teaching has taken me to Florida, Texas and Minnesota but I continued to paint throughout this time. I have exhibited and sold my work in the United States, Europe and Africa.  I now intend to dedicate myself to painting full time.

My  narrative paintings were labelled Magical Realism by one gallery, because I use symbolism for depicting contemporary issues and intellectual concerns.  Whimsy, humour and ambiguity are characteristic of many of my paintings.  I want to stimulate viewers to question what they see and to reflect on the many possibilities in a given situation.  Illusion and reality… where is the truth to be situated ?

Magical realism apart, I also paint still life - mainly flowers - and of course portraits, usually, but not always, by commission. I particularly like painting children.

Unlike my paintings, my photography reflects my historical interests, my love of flowers and nature, and my travels.

My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.

Inner Lives

The Environment

I have spent much time in museums examining the work of famous artists. Those who have inspired me most are Magritte, Van Gogh and Hokusai.  Magritte for his ability to stimulate the viewer to look beyond what appears on the canvas, Van Gogh for his extraordinary colours and his focus on the ordinary, and Hokusai for his communion with nature and the environment.

I have often been asked whether Frieda Kahlo was the inspiration for my paintings of women.  The answer is no,  Although I admire her paintings, her focus is on herself and her personal suffering, emotional and physical.  I am more interested in interpreting - in my own way - what I see, and have seen, as the experience of other women.
